‘Stop sending money home’ – Peter Obi tells Nigerians in UK

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians living in the United Kingdom to stop sending money to relatives and friends back home who seek financial assistance, asking them instead to encourage the people to vote for credible leaders.

Obi made the call during a town hall meeting with his supporters in the UK on Sunday, arguing that Nigerians in the diaspora should prioritise efforts to elect responsible leaders who can improve living conditions in the country.

The former Anambra State governor acknowledged that he was not a saint but maintained that his record in office demonstrated his commitment to responsible leadership. He also challenged other former governors to show that they saved up to 10 per cent of the amount he claimed to have saved during his tenure.

“You have people at home in Nigeria today who are begging you for money. Tell them no! Let's put somebody who has proven... I'm not saying I'm a saint, but at least, I have said something,” Obi said.

“I was not the only governor, and I challenge people if one governor can save 10 per cent of the money I saved, but there is nobody that did that,” he added.

Obi further argued that Nigeria would only experience meaningful change when citizens reject corrupt leadership and demand better governance through their choices at the polls.

He urged Nigerians in the diaspora to use their influence to encourage relatives and friends back home to support leaders they believe can deliver responsible governance.
